Introduction

The Special Correspondents and Special Artists were celebrated journalists who achieved their renown working for the popular daily metropolitan press. All household names in their day, the key protagonists amongst the first generation included the Special Correspondents William Howard Russell (The Times), George Augustus Sala (Daily Telegraph and Illustrated London News) and Archibald Forbes (Daily News), and the Special Artists, William Simpson (aka ‘Crimean Simpson’, Illustrated London News), Sydney Prior Hall (who joined the staff of The Graphic shortly before the Franco-Prussian War of 1870), and Melton Prior (Illustrated London News).
