Description
The last heir apparent to the Hawaiian throne, Kai’ulani was the niece of King Kalāākaua and Queen Lili’uokalani. After her mother’s death, she was sent to England to continue her education, under the guardianship of Theo H. Davies, owner of one of the leading sugar firms in Hawaii. She attended Great Harrowden Hall boarding school for girls for three years, before moving to Hove, Brighton to be privately tutored. Plans were being made for her return to Hawaii but were disrupted by the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy in 1893. Her government stipend ceased, causing financial difficulties, and she and her father stayed with friends and relatives across Europe until 1897. She returned to Hawaii as a private citizen in 1897 but, after years of ill health, died at her home two years later.
