Description

Akenawaka toured southern England lecturing about and performing Native customs. In November 1888, he made headlines due to an unfortunate incident at Gravesend. Upon his return to the town, possibly to arrange a lecture, he was chased through the streets by a crowd who thought he might be Jack the Ripper. He was forced to hide at a local shop until a policeman arrived to escort him to the police station for his own safety.
