Description
Kennerly, a Carlisle graduate, served with the 158th Aero Squadron. He survived the sinking of the SS Tuscania in February 1918 and spent the next few months in England, reuniting with his entire squadron at Flowerdown Camp on August 25th (they had been divided into flights at various locations) before being shipped to France in September. He wrote to the staff at Carlisle in March 1918, informing them that he was “enjoying the best of health and getting along first rate in my capacity as a soldier in Uncle Sam’s Army.” He also described the sinking of the Tuscania and his rescue, before noting that he was now at his second aviation training school “somewhere in England,” although he could not say “how long we will be here.”
