Description
This “heir to the quasi-independent Central American territory” accompanied the Earl of Warwick to London. Although from Central rather than North America, we have included him here because of the strong trade and diplomatic relationships between the peoples on the Mosquito Coast (Nicaragua and Honduras) and the English, despite persistent efforts by the Spanish to break this connection. He lived in London for around 3 years, an English man (Lewis Morris) held hostage in his place, for his safe return. He was befriended by Charles I, who even financed his education (hence placing this flag on the Palace of Whitehall, the King’s main residence). The prince acceded to the “throne” after his return in 1637. Some time after 1660, his successor also visited England. There are many other visitors from the Mosquito Coast later in the century who we have not included in this version of the map.
