Description

Vaughan reports that the Mashpee Wampanoag sent their Mohegan schoolmaster to London (via the West Indies after his ship from Rhode Island was wrecked off Hispaniola and he found himself impressed into the Royal Navy). When he finally extricated himself, he delivered a petition to the King on behalf of the Mashpee, regarding Massachussetts colonists’ encroachment on their land and fishing rights. For want of more detail of his journey, we have placed Cognehew at Buckingham Palace, since George III was the King who made that Palace a major residence (along with Windsor). We have no evidence that the Mohgan schoolmaster was actually there, however.
