In 2016, actress and activist Madonna Thunder Hawk and her daughter, Marcella Gilbert, participated in a public meeting at St Mary’s College, Belfast, to raise awareness of the 40th anniversary of American Indian Movement activist Leonard Peltier’s incarceration. Thunder Hawk, who is a member of the Oohenumpa band of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, was an active member of the American Indian Movement and has devoted her life to civil rights activism.
