Description
Patrick served with the Canadian Forestry Corps in England during the Second World War. As part of his training, he took a course at Leeds University, which included a visit to Markham Main Colliery in Armthorpe. He told the reporter that he had been a lumberjack before the war and that while “this first experience of mining was interesting,” he “would not like to take it up as an occupation after being used to the open air.”
