Description
A party of Mohawk from Akwesasne arrived in Liverpool in August 1867 with Captain B.W. Johnson to introduce England to the game of lacrosse. While they spent most of August and September playing games at London venues, such as Crystal Palace, Lord’s Cricket Ground, and Beaufort House in Walham Green, they also played in Reading and Brighton. The Brighton Gazette reported that almost 1,000 people attended the “exciting game.” The “spectators appeared to be highly amused and frequently applauded the dexterity of the Indians.”
