Description

In January 1881, King Kalākaua embarked from Honolulu on a trip around the world. After visiting Tokyo, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Kolkata, Mumbai Cairo, Naples, and Rome, he reached London in July 1881. He stayed at Claridges Hotel, attended the opera at Covent Garden, and was presented to Queen Victoria and other members of the Royal Family. After 18 days in the city, Kalākaua left for Dover to catch the ferry to Calais on his way to Brussels. He eventually returned home to Hawaii in the autumn.
