Description
Martin, a famous Northwest Coast carver, along with his wife and granddaughter attended the 1958 dedication of a totem pole he had carved. It was presented to the Queen as a gift from the Canadian people and she and the Queen Mother both attended the ceremony. On his return, Martin told reporters that the “English are a wonderful people”What impressed me most was the hospitality and kindness of the English. They respected and honoured the traditions of my people.” He joked that “he liked England so much he did not want to return to Canada.”
