Description
In December 1916, 165 First Nations men from the 114th Haldimand Rifles, which largely comprised volunteers from the Six Nations reserve in Ontario, arrived at Glasgow Central Station to a dignitaries’ welcome. The men had requested furlough in Scotland since many of them had Scottish ancestry, while those who didn’t lived in a part of Ontario where Scottish place names and Scottish settler neighbours abounded. They spent several days in Glasgow, being wined and Dinéd, visiting the cathedral, the Clyde shipyards, and more, before heading for Edinburgh where Clear Sky spoke from the battlements of Edinburgh Castle. It is clear that the men saw great affinity between themselves and the Scottish, as fellow citizens of the Empire. Before leaving Scotland, the 114th held a whip round for the Scottish ambulance service.
