Description

After being assigned to the 76th General Hospital unit, LeBeau shipped out to Britain. She arrived in Liverpool, England, and was then transported to Llandudno, Wales, for training. Llandudno was a Hospital Training Area for American troops. Nurses were often billeted in private homes and they sometimes trained on Llandudno West Beach. LeBeau recalled: “We spent, I think, a couple of weeks there, and just waiting, and they tried to drill the nurses there in the time that we were waiting. And they had a real blackout there. You had to weave your way into buildings because they had it all curtained off and because of the blackout…And if you used a flashlight, you had to direct it down…so that the light would not be seen by, you know, others.” (VHP interview, around 07:55 onwards)
