Description

In 1605, George Weymouth kidnapped five Abenaki individuals and brought them back to England, lodging three of them with Ferdinando Gorges and two with John Popham; these Englishmen would use the knowledge the Abenakis imparted in colonial ventures along the East Coast. One of them, Skidwarres, was taken back to Pemaquid by George Popham and Gilbert in a 1607 expedition, during which he acted as a reluctant guide and mediator. His presence and diplomacy eased tensions when the English first landed.
