Senior Research Fellow and Associate Professor at the Environmental Change Institute, Oxford.

Tom’s research interests are in human ecology, adaptation, local and traditional ecological knowledge, conservation, coastal and marine environments, conceptualizations of space and place, and the political ecology of resource management among the indigenous peoples of North America and the circumpolar North.\

He was the External Examiner for the Kent Masters programmes between 2011 and 2015, and co-investigator on the Human Adaptation to Biodiversity Change project (ESPA) and a co-editor and co-author of a recent Special Issue Ambio 48(12) on the topic in 2019.

He is also the co-editor of a recent volume: Handbook of Indigenous Environmental Knowledge: Global Themes and Practice, eds. T. Thornton & S. Bhagwat. Routledge. ISBN-13: 978-1138280915.
