Coherence Gated Laser Ray Tracing on an FPGA Architecture.

3D volumetric imaging techniques such as Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) have been improved with the addition of Adaptive Optics (AO) systems. One limitation of current AO systems is the ability for the wavefront sensor to distinguish between light returned from differing layers of a multilayer sample (such as the human retina). By employing techniques of phase-shifting interferometry within the wave-front sensor light from only the layer of interest may be selected, while rejecting stray light and light from other layers. This has been demonstrated by Wang and Podoleanu using the well-known Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor (SHWFS). This project is focusing on a less well known wavefront sensor design known as Laser Ray Tracing (LRT), in which a pencil laser beam is used to scan the sample sequentially in time, in contrast with the SHWFS that obtains the entire wavefront profile in parallel. LRT is well suited to be processed in real-time via a field programmable gate array (FPGA) due to the serial nature of the data acquisition process. It is the goal to perform this coherence-gated LRT sensing in real-time for 3D volumetric wavefronts using the principles of time-domain and frequency-domain OCT.
