Do you have a degree in Physics/Optics or Electrical Engineering? Do you have experience of undertaking research in an optics lab?
We are looking for Research Associate in Optical Coherence Tomography. This position is supported by two grants: “ADASMART”, funded by ERC, and NIHR at the BRC UCL Institute of Ophthalmology. Your research activity will tackle several instruments to better image tissue with emphasis on imaging the eye. Lower cost versions of such instrumentation will also be a focus, employing digital commercial cameras and smartphones.
To perform such research, you will use prior knowledge of optical coherence tomography (OCT), interferometry, fibre optics, scanning, microscopy, tuning lasers, cameras and their interfacing to computers. Knowledge of LabVIEW is also essential. You will need to be well organised and disciplined and collaborate with other members of the AOG.
As Research Associate you will:
- Devise and assemble innovative optical configurations to achieve agreed goals.
- Collaborate on the overall design and requirements with all partners involved.
- Contact suppliers, request quotes, manage ordering to ensure a timely progress of the lab activity.
- Write regular reports, and compiling data.
To be successful in this role you will have:
- A good honours degree in Physics/Optics or Electrical Engineering.
- Research towards PhD completed and thesis in advanced state.
- Experience in undertaking research in an optics lab.
- Experience of LabVIEW, C++, MATLAB.
- Prior research in experience in optical coherence tomography or microscopy.

The School of Physical Sciences (SPS) is part of the Faculty of Sciences, within the University. SPS is a dynamic department achieving national and international excellence in both teaching and research. The research effort is led by four groups, Applied Optics, Astrophysics and Planetary Science, Forensic Science, and Functional Materials. SPS has also developed a very active outreach programme within schools and professional institutions at the local and national level.
