We are recruiting for three PhD Studentships in the fields of Optics and Laser Physics, with emphasis on optical coherence tomography for a period of 36 months with a start date anytime between 1st February 2020 and 31 January 2021, within the Applied Optics Group, School of Physical Sciences. 

These are supported by the Marie Curie Innovative Training Network scheme, 860807, EU funded, jointly organised with 14 other universities, companies and hospitals in Europe. You will spend time at the University of Kent and at the other beneficiaries or associated partners. Supervision will be provided in an European setting where specialized and complementary training will be provided at the training sites as well as during network events. 

Research will focus on innovative solutions for fast, narrow line width, stable phase and wide tuning bandwidth swept sources for optical coherence tomography. 

As Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher you will:

– Devise and assemble innovative optical configurations to achieve the goals and milestones as described in the research programme

– Interact with the supervisors at University of Kent and at the seconding partners in the ITN;

– Attend courses and workshops recommended by the supervisors;

To be successful you will:

– at the time of recruitment, be in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of your research careers and must not have resided or carried out you main activity (work, studies, etc) in the UK for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to appointment

– have a good background in theoretical and experimental optics and expected to have graduated in Physics (Optics) or Electrical and Electronic Engineering

– be highly imaginative and self-motivated individuals with expertise in lasers, cameras, fibre optics, digital signal processing

– have prior experience of LabView or C++ and skills in interfacing I/O boards are essential

The School of Physical Sciences (SPS) is situated in the newly refurbished science laboratories on the Canterbury Campus – a green garden campus that overlooks the historic city – and just an hour by high-speed train to London. It is part of the Faculty of Sciences within the University of Kent, and offers a number of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Physics, Chemistry, and Forensic Sciences.
