Oliver Dial: The Future of Quantum Computing

In this public lecture Oliver Dial, Chief Technical Officer at IBM Quantum, will discuss the Future of Quantum Computing. This free evening event is open to all and is brought to you by the Hubbard Theory Consortium, a branch of the International Institute for Complex Adaptive Matter (I2CAM). It will take place at 7pm in the Clore Lecture Theatre, Huxley Building, Imperial College on 12 July 2023. Get your free ticket on EventBrite.

About the Speaker

Oliver Dial is the Chief Technology Officer at IBM Quantum in New York. He is well known for his work on large superconducting quantum processors, playing a central role in the the development of IBM’s 20-qubit quantum processor, which was the world’s most advanced of its time and started the device pipeline for IBM Quantum premium systems.

A cornerstone of Oliver’s work is solving challenges that seem nearly impossible, and making them routine and intuitive for others. He was drawn to IBM Research by the opportunity to stay hands-on in the lab, working with quantum hardware. “I wish I could say that my career as a scientist was guided by an inspiration to build a quantum computer from an early age,” Oliver said, “but honestly that would be a lot less fun than the truth, which is that I’ve focused on what seemed interesting or important, and made a lot of mistakes.”

Oliver Dial studied as an undergraduate at California Institute for Technology and completed his Ph.D. at MIT working on the Quantum Hall effect. After working as a postdoctoral student on spin qubits, he joined the Research Staff of IBM in 2012, as manager of the Quantum Electronic Device group. He became an IBM Fellow in 2021.

Attendance is free is but space is limited therefore a free ticket is necessary to attend this event. You can get your free ticket from EventBrite. We thank Imperial College for the use of the venue and gratefully acknowledge financial support from ICAM-I2CAM.
