Lectures and seminars 2010-11

Below is a list of Centre for Modern European Literature events for the 2010-11 academic year.

Wednesday 27 October 2010: Professor Elza Adamowicz (Queen Mary, University of London), ‘Dysfunctional Couples: (Photo)montage in Dada and Surrealism’

Thursday 4 November 2010: Professor David Gullentops (Vrije Universiteit, Brussels), ‘Jean Cocteau: Poetry in Word and Image’

David Gullentops will present The World of Jean Cocteau, a 55-minute film he has made with Ann Van Sevenant. The World of Jean Cocteau explores the relationship between Cocteau’s manuscripts and his work in various media, particularly drawing and cinema. This allows broader reflection on the interaction between the verbal and the visual in twentieth-century poetry and other forms of expression. David Gullentops is Professor of French in the Faculty of Arts, Language and Literature at the Vrije Universiteit in Brussels. He is Director of the Research Centre Esthétique, Imaginaire et Création. He is a specialist in the theory of poetic discourse and in the relationship between poetry and other forms of literary and artistic expression, particularly in the work of Jean Cocteau. He has also published on Dotremeont, Maeterlinck, Michaux, Rodenbach and Verhaeren and has worked on the elaboration of a cognitive reading model that is suitable for the approach of hybrid artforms in the poetry of the twentieth century. David Gullentops is editor of the Cahiers Jean Cocteau and co-editor of the Complete Works of Jean Cocteau being published by Gallimard in the Bibliothèque de la Pléiade.

Wednesday 8 December 2010: Dr James Fowler (University of Kent), ‘That Obscure Object of Desire: The Prude in Richardson and the French Libertine Novel’
