This audio documentary is based on our work with the Sikh community in Kent, around mental health
A new audio documentary has been published on the Anthropology News pages of the American Anthropologist Association. It is based on the Engaging Kent Sikhs with mental health research project, funded by University of Kent, Kent and Medway Medical School (KMMS) and Clinical Research Network Kent Surrey Sussex (CRN KSS).
Mental health can be a “taboo” subject for many Sikhs. This is explicitly the case for older Sikhs — the generation that migrated to the UK, but also for their children. The audio documentary was created with recordings made during ethnographic fieldwork in 2022–2023. The Kent research team includes a group of Sikh community co-researchers and international PhD students and artists, including audio documentary maker Elena Dikomitis.
Engaging Kent Sikhs with mental health research is one of five projects to engage underserved communities with mental health research.
Team: Prof Lisa Dikomitis, Prof Sukhi Shergill, Ms Elena Dikomitis, Ms Tejinderjit Sanghera, Ms Aman Rattan).
