CHSS Annual Lecture: 75 years on – can the NHS deliver or is it in terminal decline?

The NHS has just embarked on its latest reorganisation, and in our annual lecture Niall Dickson considers the prospects for the NHS as it marks its 75th birthday amidst unprecedented demand, tighter budgets and a new set of institutions charged with making health and care integration work. Niall Dickson CBE is the Chairman of East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust, one of the largest acute hospital groups in England and the largest employer in Kent and Medway. He has held a series of national roles; as Chief Executive of The King’s Fund think tank, The General Medical Council, the doctors’ regulator and the NHS Confederation which represents healthcare organisations across the UK. He served as Chair of the International Association of Medical Regulatory Authorities (IAMRA) and represented the UK on the Council of the International Hospital Federation. For 16years until 2004 he worked as a broadcaster for BBC News, latterly as the Social Affairs Editor focussing on the Today programme and the Ten O’Clock News. Niall is a graduate of Edinburgh University where he read politics and history. He is an honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, the Royal College of General Practitioners, the University of Cardiff, University College London Institute of Education and the Queen’s Nursing Institute. He has an Honorary Doctorate from Oxford Brookes University. He was appointed Commander of the British Empire (CBE) for services to patient safety in the 2017 Birthday Honours. Niall lives in Kent and served as Chairman of the Leeds Castle Foundation from 2012 until December 2022.
