This talk introduces the new class of unconventional insulators: bulk
insulators that exhibit bulk quantum oscillations. The experimental
discovery of this phenomenon in SmB6 is reviewed, and compared and
contrasted with subsequent reports of unconventional insulating
behaviour in YbB12, alpha-RuCl3 and WTe2 in which bulk quantum
oscillations with a rich variety of properties have been experimentally
reported.
