Anne Dell is Professor of Carbohydrate Biochemistry at Imperial College, London where she is Head of the Department of Life Sciences. Anne was a chemistry undergraduate at the University of Western Australia before undertaking a PhD at the University of Cambridge supported by an 1851 Exhibition Research Scholarship. She moved to Imperial College London for her postdoc where she rose through the ranks to a Personal Chair in 1991. She was elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society in 2002 and to the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2004. She was awarded a CBE in 2009 in recognition of her services to science. Anne collaborates with scientists around the world to define the biological roles that glycans (sugar polymers) play in health and disease. She seeks to answer questions such as “How do pathogens infect cells?” and “Why are developing foetuses not rejected as “foreign” by their mothers?”. Answers to these questions are facilitating the development of new drugs and vaccines.
