Violetta Ritz

About

Violetta is pursuing a PhD in International Relations and International Law under the supervision of Dr Frank Grundig and Dr Luis Eslava. Her research interests include transnational climate law and policy, climate litigation, negotiations and the nexus between law, policy, and science. In her PhD project, Violetta focuses on ways of specifying states’ obligations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by means of an interdisciplinary approach spanning the fields of climate law and climate sciences. Her work on legally operationalisable methods for distributing a global carbon budget among states has been published by Cambridge University Press in Transnational Environmental Law.

Violetta holds an MA in International Relations with International Law from the University of Kent. She has completed the Executive Education Program at Harvard Law School’s Program on Negotiation as well as numerous training courses in climate sciences, among others, from the UK National Centre for Atmospheric Science. Prior to joining the GCDC, Violetta worked as Junior Researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law (MPIL) focusing on a project on legal remedies for human rights violations committed by foreign states. Next to her role at the MPIL, Violetta has also been working as a simultaneous interpreter. She is a sworn interpreter and translator and holds a MA in this field from Heidelberg University.
