The Global Challenges Doctoral Centre (GCDC) was delighted to host its inaugural GCRF GCDC Early Career Researcher Training School from 2-6 July 2019 at the University of Kent (Canterbury) in collaboration with the GCRF COMPASS project. The event’s main objective was to offer an opportunity for further skills development and exchange of ideas for PhD and Postdoctoral Researchers working on capacity-building and political, economic, societal and environmental developments in ODA countries.

The training school brought together 25 international researchers from a variety of countries and research backgrounds for training, an opportunity to present their research and participate in social and study visits. Short bios of participants are available below.
Theme and format
The theme of the 2019 training school was ‘Governance, resilience and order: Eurasia and beyond, under the pressure of global and regional change’. The theme responded to current developments in the region and beyond, and the training school aimed to ask how global and regional transformational change is affecting wider Eurasia. The event explored the concepts of resilience as a new regime of governance and examined the challenges and opportunities for growth and capacity-building, both nationally and regionally across and beyond the Eurasian space.
‘The opportunity to discuss in-depth governance and resilience-related issues during the sessions allowed me to share and test my own research findings. I am happy that I was able to network with researchers from different countries and to exchange opinions and experience’.
The training school was run according to a European Consortium for Political Research format, offering in-depth discussion around submitted papers, and the best papers will be published in the format of on-line conference proceedings. More information on this publication will be available in due course. The discussion sessions were supplemented with skills training sessions, study visits and social activities.
