Coding, cryptology and cyber security have roots all the way back to ancient Greece, Rome and China, and these roots have carried throughout all periods of history. Information from military plans to treaties all had to be kept safe somehow and there were many creative ways that people accomplished this.

In affiliation with the 2023-24 iCSS-KMCC-KMCS3 CyberAnything Competition, the History Society and the Kent Classics and Archaeology Society (KCAS) are combining forces to organise a sub-competition named “The History of Anything Cyber”.

The same as the main competition, this sub-competition welcomes anything related to the history of cryptology, cyber security, online safety or any other topics relevant for today’s cyber world. You could write an essay, a blog post, or even a poem, use your camera to capture a moment as a photo or a short video, create a drawing or a painting, prepare an infographic such as a flyer or a PowerPoint slide, make a 3-D printed object or a hand-crafted artefact, etc., which can tell a story about living, learning and connecting with the history of codes and ciphers. The possibilities are endless!

To be eligible, you must be a University of Kent Student AND either:

  • a History Society Member (join here)
  • a Kent Classics and Archaeology Society Member (join here)
  • OR a History, Classics, Archaeology or Ancient History student (joint honours included!)

Your submissions will be judged by two committee members from each society and one academic from the iCSS, who will award one £20 Amazon e-voucher to each of the top three entries. We will collect your name and email address so that we can contact you if you win a cash prize. The judging panel however will only see anonymised submissions to avoid any judging bias. The organisers and judges will not submit to the sub-competition themselves to avoid any conflicts of interest. The cash prizes are sponsored by iCSS.

In addition to the opportunities of winning the three cash prizes of the sub-competition, all valid submissions to this sub-competition (including but not limited to the three winning entries) will be automatically considered for the main competition, which will provide a second set of cash prizes, up to £80 Amazon e-vouchers. More details about the main competition can be found here. You are of course welcome to submit directly to the main competition, particularly if you have ideas unrelated to history of cyber that will not be eligible for this sub-competition.

Deadline of the sub-competition: Friday 15th February 23:59 pm GMT

To submit to the sub-competition, please click or scan the following QR-code. Please note that text-based submissions are limited to maximum 750 words, and the file size of other types of submissions is maximum 100MB.
