Developing New Ceria Based Materials to Address Challenges in Energy and the Environment

This proposal is aimed at fully exploiting the benefits of the extraordinary properties exhibited by ceria-based nanomaterials due to the fact that ceria acts as an oxygen buffer, releasing and storing oxygen ions depending on the oxygen partial pressure of the environment while retaining the same crystal structure. This proposal will look into optimising this oxygen storage capacity which is particularly enhanced at the nanoscale and at the same time stabilising the nanoparticles by embedding them in aerogel matrices.
