Thesis Title: Investigating the chemical composition of impact plumes

About

Jess completed her undergraduate MPhys with Honours degree at the University of Kent in 2022. She is now continuing her studies as a PhD student in impact chemistry, working alongside Dr Penny Wozniakiewicz and Dr Jon Tandy.

Research interests

Project title: Investigating the chemical composition of impact vapour plumes using a light gas gun integrated time-of-flight mass spectrometer

Project outline: This research will study the composition of, and reactions that occur, within impact vapour plumes during hypervelocity impacts. The research will be conducted by enhancing the Kent light gas gun (LGG) with a time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOF-MS), to enable the in-situ analysis of impact plume chemistry.

The main objective for this research is to determine the capability of the TOF-MS. This will be achieved by impacting into icy targets to produce an ideal abundance of gaseous species to test the mass spectrometers ionisation source and detector system.
