Dr Jonathan Tandy

Lecturer in Analytical Chemistry

About

Jon graduated in 2006 from The University of York with a MChem (Hons) in Chemistry. He continued his studies at York and was awarded a PhD in Chemistry in 2011. He subsequently undertook postdoctoral research positions at the California Institute of Technology, The University of Leicester and Imperial College London before joining London Met as a lecturer in 2016. Jon is now a Senior Lecturer in Physical Chemistry and course leader for the BSc Natural Sciences degrees.

Research interests

Jon's current research primarily focuses on high-speed imaging and emission spectroscopy of light flashes seen during hypervelocity impacts replicating meteoroids impacting planetary surfaces, allowing an examination of the highly energetic and dynamic chemical reactions. Most recently this has been examining impact flashes from targets used in the shock synthesis of amino acids. He is also using his expertise in cryogenics to develop new experimental techniques to replicate the icy mixtures found on the surfaces of solar system bodies for subsequent impact experiments.
