Micrometeorite found on the Roof of Canterbury Cathedral

The first micrometeorite from Canterbury Cathedral. The image is in black and white because it was taken using a scanning electron microscope.

The search for micrometeorites on the roofs of Canterbury Cathedral already proved to be fruitful, with the discovery of the first cosmic spherule. This particle is spherical because its precursor particle entered the Earth’s atmosphere at speeds of several kilometre per second, resulting in it heating up in a matter of seconds to extremely high temperatures.

This search was conducted by Drs Matthias van Ginneken and Penny Wozniakiewicz. For more information on the project follow this link.
