Royal Society University Research Fellow

About

Gunnar’s research focuses on advanced numerical simulations for strongly correlated and topological matter. He is best known for his pioneering works on fractional Chern insulators, which are novel quantum Hall phenomena occurring in materials or cold atom experiments that realise synthetic magnetic fields.
Gunnar currently develops new numerical approaches based on diagrammatic Monte-Carlo methods, in order to understand strongly coupled superconducting and heavy-fermion phases. He is also an expert in exact diagonalisation, tensor methods and variational quantum Monte Carlo approaches, which he has applied to identify range of new exotic collective behaviours in strongly interacting quantum systems.
