Noel Carroll is Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at the City University of New York (CUNY). He holds a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Illinois, Chicago, a PhD in Cinema Studies from New York University, an MA in Philosophy from the University of Pittsburgh and a BA in Philosophy from Hofstra University.

Although Carroll is best known for his work in the philosophy of film (he is a proponent of cognitive film theory), he has also published journalism, works on philosophy of art generally, theory of media, and also philosophy of history.
