Dr Gavin Mountjoy gave an invited talk in the "Glass Genome" Symposium of the International Materials Research Congress in Cancun Mexico
Dr Gavin Mountjoy, who is the MEE group expert in the local structure of glasses, gave an invited presentation in the “Glass Genome” Symosium of the International Materials Research Congress in Cancun Mexico. This symposium was held during the 17th and 18th of August during this prestigious international conference, which ran from the 13th-18th of August. The symposia aimed to combine physics-based and empirical models to understand glass properties and find a way to optimise glass compositions for emerging applications. This general framework is known as “the glass genome”, by borrowing the idea of biological genomics, which involves the analysis of a code for structure and traits. Gavin’s talk was entitled “Recent progress and prospects towards a systematic framework for understanding the phosphate family of glasses”, which amongst other applications is important as a biomaterial. The highlight image for this article shows a model structural organisation in a calcium (green) phosphate (red and pink) glass with a composition related to human bone mineral.
