The Lungs of the City

Health, Sustainability and Resilience in the Urban Park

Welcome to a walk in the Virtual Park!

This project, funded by the Wellcome Trust, looks at the city park as a place of health and wellbeing across a global geography. Our team of researchers (meet us in the people section) explore the specific park histories of three iconic world cities, London, New Delhi and Shanghai, to see how urban green space has been woven into the fabric of the modern city.

We are interested in documenting how the park became an essential part of our lived urban experience, from park creation in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to the varied uses of urban green space in our present.  2020-1 has been a particularly important time for and we are especially keen to capture how our experience of these places has been influenced by the COVID 19 pandemic. Have a look at our new digital community project page to see the ‘people’s park noticeboard’ that illustrates your stories about Victoria Park, London

We set up this website to share our research and also to launch a pilot initiative designed to gather park users’ thoughts on how and why their local urban space matters as a place of wellbeing. Come and share your park stories in our pop up tent pages:
