Ghana

In this case study, which will be initiated in 2018, the project will review recent and ongoing efforts by the Ghanaian government to regulate the field of traditional medicine, both in relation to its products and its professions. It will interrogate the historical backdrop of state intervention, as well as its current effects on medical practice and public health.

Senegal

In Senegal, the background to and contemporary contexts of ongoing policy conversations on the regulation of traditional medicine will be explored. We are particularly interested to reflect on how the colonial history of Senegal has affected current health contexts and politico-legal strategies, given the very biomedical-centred approach of its former colonial power, France.

We are grateful to the Institute de Recherché pour le Development (Dakar) for agreeing to host our lead researcher during fieldwork in Senegal.
