Andjelka Kovačević Delivers Inspiring Talk at KAIROS on Detecting Binary Supermassive Black Holes

Unveiling the Complex Dynamics of Galaxy Cores through Advanced Bayesian Techniques and Time-Domain Observations

Professor Andjelka Kovačević, a prominent astrophysicist from the University of Belgrade’s Department of Astronomy and the President of the National Committee for Astronomy in Serbia, delivered an enlightening presentation at our KAIROS meeting yesterday while visiting the University of Kent. Her talk, titled “Bayesian Unification of Time Domain Observations for Close Binary Supermassive Black Hole Detection and Construction of Robust Target Catalogues,” explored groundbreaking methodologies in astrophysics.

During her presentation, Prof Kovačević elaborated on the integration of Bayesian statistics with astrometric and time-domain data to enhance the detection of binary supermassive black holes (SMBHs). Her innovative approach aims to refine the construction of target catalogues for next-generation interferometers, which are crucial in observing these celestial phenomena.

Prof Kovačević also discussed the significant challenges and the potential of overcoming the “final parsec problem,” a key issue in SMBH studies. Her research suggests that sub-parsec SMBH binary systems could be more common than previously thought, offering new insights into galactic dynamics and evolution.

The event provided an excellent platform for Prof Kovačević to share her findings with fellow KAIROS academics and students, fostering collaboration and discussion within the academic community. Her presentation not only contributes to our understanding of the universe but also highlights the significant advancements in computational astrophysics and data analysis techniques.

KAIROS continues to be a crucial forum for academics and students to engage with cutting-edge research and innovative ideas in science and technology, promoting a deeper understanding and exploration of complex scientific phenomena.
