Felipe Fantuzzi, Heidy Quitián-Lara, and Nigel Mason contributed to an international workshop in Santiago de Cali, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations in astrochemistry and planetary science
Researchers from KAIROS, namely Felipe Fantuzzi, Heidy Quitián-Lara, and Nigel Mason, took part in the international workshop Exploring Research Frontiers in Astrochemistry and Astrobiology: Perspectives from Colombia, held in Santiago de Cali, Cauca Valley, Colombia. The event gathered scientists from across Colombia and abroad to promote new collaborative efforts at the intersection of astrochemistry, astrobiology, and planetary sciences.
The workshop highlighted the central role of natural sciences in the development of astrochemical and astrobiological research and emphasised the value of interdisciplinary collaboration to explore emerging research directions. As part of the UNESCO-declared International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (2025), the event also underscored the importance of spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations as essential tools for the detection, characterisation, and modelling of molecules in space environments.
The programme included presentations by both national and international researchers, who shared their recent advances and experiences in the field. Participants were also introduced to the Europlanet platform, learning about opportunities for project development and international funding in astrochemical and astrobiological research.
By strengthening research networks and enhancing visibility of Colombian initiatives, the workshop played a key role in advancing scientific collaboration and capacity-building in astrochemistry, astrobiology, and planetary science across Latin America.
