Biomedical Engineering

Research in Biomedical Engineering spans from computational modelling applied to understand physical properties of biological cells to the development of electronic devices to tackle medical conditions. The research team has established unique research expertise in the field of Biomechanics, which is evidenced by publications in high impact factor journals and by EPSRC grants. The research into medical devices has allowed the establishment of links with clinicians and with companies working in medical applications.

Medical devices for swallowing disorders

Key research projects include:

  • Development of sensing devices to rehabilitate patients with swallowing disorders
  • Image-based Cancer Cell Line Authentication Using Deep Neural Networks.
  • Modelling and simulation tools for the understanding of mechanical properties of red blood cells
  • Study of the geometrical arrangement of biological cells to understand cell signalling in the ovary
