Dr Shambhavi Naik is the Chairperson of the Advanced Biology Programme at the Takshashila Institution and a Consultant for the InKlude Labs. She has a PhD in Cancer Biology from the University of Leicester, UK, and worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at NCBS and InStem, Bangalore. She has a PGP in Public Policy from the Takshashila Institution. Shambhavi researches India’s policies in areas of emerging life sciences from the perspective of enhancing bioeconomy and safeguarding biosecurity.
She was a member of the drafting committee for India’s risk assessment of genetically modified crops piloted by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, and worked with the Rajya Sabha Parliamentary Committee on Science and Technology to strengthen a Bill on the use of DNA fingerprinting in forensics. She co-chaired a Think20 (an official engagement group of G20) taskforce on Sustainable Development Goals, which involved reviewing ideas, deliberations with experts and compiling recommendations for the G20 summit.
She is a Planning Committee member for a US National Academy of Sciences’ project on enhancing India-US biotechnology cooperation under iCET. Shambhavi, together with collaborators at Australian National University (ANU), has received a grant from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to explore the ethical deployment of synthetic biology in the Indo-Pacific.
