Panel settings

The News panel, as shown below, can display stories from a local or external source. Local news posts are stories that are created as posts which are part of the site where external news posts comes from blogs.kent.

The feed can be filtered by one more categories or tags. When adding multiple categories or tags they should be separated by comma. For example; categoryOne,categoryTwo,categoryThree.

This panel has the ability to limit the number of stories displayed as well as toggle the “Show more” button which loads more items.

The News panel below is an example uses an external feed from the Web development blog on blogs.kent, filtered to only show stories from the “User experience” category. The panel is also set to only show the 4 most recent stories but displays the “Show more” button to load more items.

  • Panel title and background
    • Title – Title for the panel
    • Panel background – Background colour for the news panel
  • Main settings
    • Source – Choose from local ‘Posts‘ or external articles pulled in from blogs.kent
    • Local – Category – If choosing to display local posts you can specify which category of posts to show, useful for breaking projects onto separate pages / panels
    • Single or multiple feeds If choosing to use blogs.kent as your news source you may choose to pull from multiple blogs simultaneously. If ‘Multiple‘ is enabled you will be able to enter the ‘Link‘, and optionally the ‘Category‘ and ‘Tag‘ for each blog that you want to pull posts from.
    • External – Link – This is the URL of the blog on blogs.kent you wish to display posts from
    • External – External category – Specify a category used on the blog
    • External – External tag – Specify a tag used on the blog
  • Category dropdown
    • News Category Dropdown – This is either on or off and independent of the panel title. When switched on the panel will loop through all posts retrieved and extract the categories found, populating the dropdown. When a user selects an item from the dropdown the category will be set and then all posts will be filtered against that category.
    • Category pre-set – If populated this will set the category prior to the posts being filtered on page load. Useful if you wish for a panel to show specific publications or category of news. Just type in the name of the desired category, and it can be in sentence or lower case.
  • Numberof posts to display

    • Set the number of items to display – Toggle for the values below
    • Display all items – Toggle to show all posts, set to yes by default
    • Number of items to display – If you select no you can specify the number of posts which will limit the size of the panel, useful on a long page
    • Disable show more button – Linked to the options above, you can set to hide the show more
    • Show more button text – Finally, you can change the show more button text. If left blank it will show ‘Show more stories‘ but if you enter any text into this field it will change to be ‘Show more <custom text>
  • Additional settings
    • Randomise the order of the posts? – Only available on local posts, this will randomise the order of the posts shown. This is done server side and the random order will be cached, with that cache clearing at regular intervals throughout the day or as new posts are published.
    • Hide date – If you wish to use the news panel for projects or exhibitions, etc, you can choose to hide the date on the card itself. This will not hide the author and date on the post itself though.
