Nature-Inspired Computational Architectural Design(ing)

Tim Ireland, Kent School of Architecture and Planning

Combines several different strands of theoretical work on conceptualising, representing and analysing space and spatiality, and looks to computer as a tool to simulate bio-inspired spatial self-organisation. Through these two endeavours we probe the concept of space and investigate the spatiality of organisms to explore the generation of form and structure for architectural practice. We explore how architectural design may benefit from embracing a decentralised approach to configuration in order to mediate and articulate the nature of inhabitation, and speculate how processes of form making and pattern generation in nature may be applied to (re) formulate and (re)articulate how we think about space, architecture and the built environment.
