The digitalisation of magazines

Tamar Jeffers McDonald, School of Arts

Tamar is the founding member of NoRMMA, a research group at the University of Kent focused on the study of film magazines. Our research is considerably aided by the ongoing digitalisation of magazine archive holdings, and in 2015 we organised a conference, Turning the Page: Digitalisation, movie magazines and historical audience studies at the University of Ghent.

Tamar is also leading a Public Engagement with Research project on the World War I magazine, The War Illustrated. Although this seems ostensibly very different from a frivolous movie magazine, there are notable similarities in the methods both types of publication use to deal with the image of the powerful woman. Tamar is working with members of the public to compile a dataset of the different ways women are represented in the war-time periodical.
