The clergy of the Church of England database

Kenneth Fincham, School of History

The Clergy of the Church of England database 1540-1835 records all the key events in the careers of clergymen, schoolteachers and patrons, among them many women, in a relational database. It draws on over 50 archives across the country, and has become a vital web resource for any interested in biography, genealogy, local history, as well as the history of the professions and of course the Church of England, including Anglican clergy in the British empire. Its content is accessible and searchable and it has created a platform for the pursuit of new research questions.

The database was created by a collaboration between historians at Kent, Durham, and King’s College London, with funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council.
