Jane Hartshorn is a Practice as Research PhD student in the School of English. Her practice explores female embodiment in relation to cultural and social discourses of illness and wellbeing. She is particularly interested in the relationship between chronic illness and sexuality, exploring the extent to which society’s understanding of the sick body conflicts with notions of female beauty, sexuality and desire. She employs poetry as an investigative tool with which to deviate from the masculine vocabulary of control and possession employed in clinical discourse, and explore how language can reposition the feminine as subject. Her practice attempts to restore female agency through the destabilisation of the subject/object dichotomy. Her first pamphlet Tract was published in 2017 by Litmus Publishing.
