(De-)Constructing an Anglo-Cherokee Chain of Friendship, 1700-1730

Tuesday 26 May @ 11:30 – 13:00 GMT

Since we have had to cancel Kristofer’s planned visit and talk, he has kindly switched to an online version, pre-circulating a chapter in progress. He will offer a brief summary & introduction and context, before we chime in with an open conversation about our responses and any questions and ideas that the material prompts.

Abstract:              This is a draft chapter from Kris’s exciting new book project tentatively titled Cherokees, Europeans, and Empire in the Trans-Appalachian West, 1670-1774. Kris was due to come to Kent to talk about the project, and has kindly agreed to pivot to an online conversation.

Author:                Kris is Leverhulme Trust Lecturer in Indigenous America at the University of Hull. A student of the 16th-18th Century Native South, Indigenous Ohio Valley, and Indian slavery, he also edits the Tennessee Historical Quarterly and co-edits the “Indians and Southern History” series with the University of Alabama Press. In addition to several books chapters and journal articles, he is the author of Middle Tennessee, 1775-1825: Progress and Popular Democracy on the Southwestern Frontier (Tennessee, 2007) and Cherokees, Europeans, and Empire in the Trans-Appalachian West, 1670-1774 (forthcoming). He also co-edit with Brady DeSanti (Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe) a volume titled Understanding and Teaching Native American History: Essays and Resources (under contract, Wisconsin).
