Robert Geary was born in Battersea, London, on 15 January 1931. He studied at Hammersmith School of Art from 1945 to 1948, and then joined Dorling Advertising. From 1949 to 1951 he spent his National Service with the RAF, and on demobilisation started work as a freelance illustrator, contributing at first to Modern Woman and Men Only. In 1952 he became illustrator and typographer to the Automobile Association, and from 1971 to 1985 was Graphics Officer to the London Geological Museum.
Geary has also worked as a freelance cartoonist and illustrator for the Daily Mail, Times Higher Education Supplement, Punch, Radio Times and The Oldie. He has illustrated a number of children’s books and designed stamps for the Guernsey Post Office.
He was elected MSIA (1967), SGA (1969), FCSD (1980) and FRSA (1981). Geary works in pen and ink and watercolour and cites his influences as Phil May and Edward Ardizzone.
