Brian Walker was born in Brislington, Bristol, on 22 March 1926. When he was fourteen he enrolled on a Pitman’s Press Correspondence Art Course, and two years later, during the Second World War, he joined the Bristol Evening World to draw war maps and cartoons. Walker joined the RAF in 1944, when he was eighteen, and after demobilisation in 1947 enrolled in the West of England College of Art on a grant of £3 a week. On leaving he won a Punch scholarship.
As well as submitting cartoons to publications such as the Guardian, Walker was a freelance writer for Picture Post, John Bull, Lilliput, Punch, and London Opinion. In 1967 he illustrated the book How to be a Motorist and Stay Happy, as a result of which he was offered work drawing children’s comics for D.C. Thompson. In 1970 he moved to IPC, and started drawing for Whizzer and Chips. Walker also contributed a strip entitled “Ar Little ‘Uns” to the Bristol Evening Post.
Walker died in June 2020.
