Colloquium: Development in Africa with Radio Astronomy (17 Feb 2021)

Professor Melvin Hoare (Leeds)

Talk Outline

I will describe the Development in Africa with Radio Astronomy (DARA) project that is delivering a training programme in radio astronomy eight African SKA partner countries. Up to sixty trainees received a training in Astrophysics, Radio Technology and Observations, and VLBI data reduction each year since 2015. In addition, trainees are exposed to entrepreneurial training from our industrial partners in the space industry.

About the Speaker

Prof Hoare obtained his PhD in Astrophysics from UCL, followed by postdoc positions at Oxford and MPIA before becoming an academic member of staff at Leeds. His research focuses on the formation of massive stars – in particular high resolution observations in the radio and millimetre regimes to investigate how material accretes via discs and how feedback via jets and winds halts the infall. He is on the Science Working Group the SKA, chairs the Consortium of Universities for Goonhilly Astronomy (CUGA), and leads the Development in Africa with Radio Astronomy (DARA) project.
