Wellcome Collection Workshop

On 21st October 2017 Artists’ Books and Medical Humanities co-hosted with the Wellcome Collection What seems to be the matter? A hands-on exploration of health, body and illness through artists’ books. Participants had the opportunity to handle artists’ books from the Wellcome Collection and from Prescriptions, part of the University of Kent’s Special Collections, Templeman Library. Dr Stella Bolaki gave a talk on the Artists’ Books and Medical Humanities project and book artist Amanda Couch demonstrated some book making techniques. In response to the collections and talks, participants made their own artists’ books and explored themes of health, illness and the body through conversation and collaboration. After the workshop three of the books created during the workshop were put on temporary display outside the Wellcome’s Viewing Room. They were accompanied by a short film of The Dowry, a moving artist’s book by Greek-Cypriot artist Alexandra Georgiou that was created while she was living with breast cancer. The film is available to watch through Wellcome Collection’s YouTube channel.
